a guide for coaching and officiating youth basketball
“Priorities”
The following concepts summarize our basic ideals and objectives in youth sport programs:
A. to create a safe and fun environment for all participants
B. to build relationships among peers and develop a sense
of belonging and of family
C. to build self esteem and to motivate people to gain more of
their potential
D. to supervise physical training and develop related skills
E. to communicate effectively and extol positive values
F. to develop responsibility and decision making skills
G. to establish goals, develop a plan of action and work
towards achievement through teamwork and cooperation
H. to use the sports environment as a forum to develop
self-respect and to acknowledge the rights of others.
The Coach
SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF COACHES
The coach is the single most important leader for his or her team.
They will be responsible for making sure that team members develop proper
attitudes regarding fair play and respect for all people. The coach will
teach players the rules of the game and help them develop both physically and emotionally.
The sport skills are merely tools to achieve
things far more important such a helping a person reach their full potential.
The coach must establish a positive environment, conducive to learning.
Their knowledge of a sport must be conveyed in such a manner that the
participant not be intimidated or feel inadequate. Successful coaches are
able to relate to players at various skill levels and ages. Good coaches
are motivates, teachers and, most important of all, role models for those
they serve.
TEACHING AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Coaches provide clear instruction before the player attempts a skill or an
activity and specific feedback afterwards. They limit instruction during
performance so as not to distract the player or players.
NOTES ON PROVIDING INSTRUCTION
1. Be prepared for questions.
2. Demonstrate to help players get the hang of the skill.
3. Give clear and concise verbal instructions in a language
and terms that the player will understand.
4. Provide time for the players to think about the information.
5. Be sure that the players understand the goal of an activity.
6. Be patient, skill development takes time and be aware of the
differences in individual’s progress.
7. Be careful of your language and tone of voice and body
language.
8. Remember, you are a role model - CHECK YOURSELF.
COACHES’ RESPONSIBILITIES
General
* Attend any and all preseason training sessions.
* Participate in the preseason assessment activities.
* Serve as a resource for clinics.
* Communicate with the Administrative staff.
Practice Sessions
* Make sure that the team members are aware of all practice sessions..
* Prepare for practice in advance; develop a plan based on
resources available through libraries, book stores and review progress from previous practice.
* Follow outline for practice sessions, allowing ample time to cover all components.
* Get to know team members personally; always call them by name.
* Keep a current list of contact numbers in case of illness or injury.
* Help players set individual goals and work toward these goals.
* Teach the skills of the sport and the importance of physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
* Lead discussions about the values emphasized in the league’s set of priorities.
* Make sure that the necessary equipment is available.
Game
* Require team to arrive early enough for adequate warm-up prior to the start of the game.
Give a brief pre-game talk:
- Place the importance of the game in proper perspective.
- Remind the player of the skills they’ve learned at practice.
- Encourage the team to focus on their objectives and less on
what the other team may be doing.
- Remind the team the value of respecting the official’s calls.
- Last but not least, encourage the players to have fun.
Demonstrate respect for the game officials:
- Never criticize or insult an official.
- Make sure that the team understands the importance of the
official’s role.
- Help control the fans and other spectators.
- Set an example of good sportsmanship for the team to follow.
- Ask question when you don’t understand a call or need and
interpretation of a rule.
- Always thank the game officials and congratulate them on a
job well done
